“It’s the truth…I’m a junkie.“
I’m sitting here in Muskoka in central Ontario, looking out the window at the additional foot of snow we just got laid on us over night.
I’m sooooo ready for spring!
I’m a spring born baby, so I feel like I have a connection to all that new life, energy, and freshness. Winter can feel very long for me.
One of the many things that spring time does for me is to get my decorator juices flowing.
I am a total decor-junkie. I even took a hiatus many years ago from working with women to take a design course and start a home staging biz. I re-design in my mind every space I walk into and get a blood-pumping rush when I visit a home decor shop or a fix-er-upper property. When I can’t sleep, I’m thinking about how to make spaces work. It’s like a puzzle that needs a great plan to come together. And I might add that I’ve designed some pretty rockin’ spaces!
But like everything else in my life, I’ve always needed to do things my way and to this day I don’t follow the rules of professional design. I let my creativity and intuition follow whatever path they want.
Screw the trends or the magazines, if the inspiration doesn’t come from inside, it’s not happening. tweet
Lots of women think they lack the expertise to design their own space. Wrong.
You’ve got your deep core to guide you.
Here’s how.
First, sit your ass down in each room in your home. Start with one at a time if you want to, or decide to approach your home all at once. Look around and take in the space. Pick a word that the space speaks to you right now. Boring? Dull? Tired? Too familiar? Flat? Same-old? Maybe a bit of all of that? Don’t start nit-picking here about what you like and what you don’t. Keep it simple and go for the overall message you get when you are in the room. Just take the first word that comes to mind and acknowledge it.
Now close your eyes and start to look inside, to that place where you let your heart run wild, where your expert on all that is you lives. Your deep core.
Ask your deep core about how you want your space to feel. She knows you. She knows what calms you. What makes you feel happy with your living space. How do you want to feel in each room? Fabulous and flirty? Comfortable and cared for? Simple and efficient? Get really clear on what that means to you.
Now imagine if you got that feeling each time you entered the room. Imagine what you might be doing in that space on a regular basis. And take it even farther. Imagine what might change in your life, including your perspective and perhaps your relationships, when your space brings you that feeling? Go wild here, and let yourself imagine the monumental as well as the inner peace. The possibilities are really endless, girlfriend! Write them all down and let yourself get excited!
Then go through some mags to get a sense of the things that float your boat and represent that feeling that you want and create a small vision board of them. Cut out items, words, images, colors, artwork, whatever gives you the feeling you’re longing for and stick them all up on a bulletin board or the like. It’s great inspiration, plus it gives the Universe a clear message about what kind of feeling you’re looking for.
Now remove everything from the room that doesn’t reflect the feeling that you want. Be brutal here, take each piece and march it right out of the room. Be forceful and clear about it, you are on a mission to create what you need in that room and that means that some things just gotta go! Don’t worry, you will survive a purge and whoever you donate/give/sell your things to will be very appreciative and give it new life. Don’t worry about the room being somewhat empty for the moment, leave only the pieces in it that you truly love for the feeling they give you. You’ll find the space much more open to your creativity from there.
It’s time to start filling it back up. You can buy some new things, or look around your house for those special things that give you the desired feeling and start filling the space. Decide on one thing at a time. Does it fit your criteria for feeling what you want to in the space? Only add it if it clearly reflects what your and your deep core has decided you want. It’s your opportunity to trust that you are the expert on you and are willing to step up and make your space exactly how you want it to feel.
So in honour of spring coming, somewhere, go for it. Be a decor-junkie with me. You don’t need special training or a shit-load of money.
You only need your deep core.
