When you’re talking out loud, who is actually speaking?
Is it you? Or is it your past history or social influences?
Is it the person you want to be? Or is it the person you’re constructed to be?
Sometimes it’s hard to know. Sometimes we get so used reacting from our negative teachings, we don’t even notice when we’re not being our real selves.
I can remember times when I walked away from conversations, hiding my needs and hiding my voice. Staying silent because of what I had been taught or what I thought was expected of me.
When we’re on the other side of the conversation with others operating from their wounds or influences, for us it can often look like a frantic attempt to do things in one certain way, their way. But underneath, it’s more likely they’re operating from the fear of going outside of who they have believed they are for a very long time.
It’s hard to be true to ourselves.
Hard, but not impossible.
I learned to shift that in myself by simply paying attention to my reactions. I notice when they are uncomfortable for me or for whoever I’m taking to. And I notice unusual or dramatic reactions from others and simply understand them a little bit better.
Awareness is one awesome tool for supporting our sense of self. When we become aware, we know we have a choice. We get to stop and decide for ourselves if our reactions are self-loving or just a repeat of the old story that has taken up residence in our heads.
Habits that have been with us for a long time and are connected to our sense of self hold on to us tightly. Release the hold by looking at them and seeing where and why they don’t serve you anymore.
Every person in all my 4 Find Your Voice books, including me, has had to dance with our history and decide how we really want to show up for others and ourselves.
So the question for you is…
Who do you want to speak from?
