Ever had an issue that you knew you weren’t cool with? Even when you felt yourself deeply stuck in complaining about it, maybe you never actually took any action that changed your experience of the issue?
I’ve been there, wallowing in anger and resentment that I blamed on outside influences. Until I learned to get out of my own way and take responsibility for myself and my experiences. Not in a I’m such a loser, kind of way, but in a I can learn to manage what comes into my life, kind of way.
That meant managing my thoughts and my behaviours in a different way.
Every day I would set my intention for what kind of day I wanted to have. Then I followed through, taking action and making conscious choices on how I would make that intention into reality. In the beginning it was generally about seeing negative things differently.
Like when someone cut me off in traffic. I would be grateful that my wheels and my body were ok, acknowledge with compassion that the other driver wasn’t simply a jerk and sent them positive energy for safe driving.
Guess what? It freaking worked!
Going forward I noticed I had no cloud over my head or distraction as I drove. I felt no tension in my body. I had no desire to flip anyone the bird. I felt good.
And every day I got better at putting my intentions into reality. And I began to use them to guide other more specific to conflicts in my life that were leaving me feeling not so great.
“Today I will love her/him anyway”.
“Today I will respect his/her ability to make their own decisions”.
“Today I will let go of my expectations of others”.
I kept working, it kept working and I kept feeling better.
It was like making the best snowball ever. Every new roll stuck to the last to make it grow as big as Frosty looks to a kid.
The shifts I was feeling were as a result of taking whole responsibility for my own life and experience of that life.
That is personal power. That is personal strength. That is calling your own shots for a better outcome. Ya, baby! There it was and with every day of practice, it grew even stronger.
It was there all the time, just waiting for me to use a simple tool like setting intentions to feel it.
If you’re not happy with something and think you need to come up with a big master plan to fix it…you don’t. Just start with something that works for you. Something that you decide will help you see or manage a challenge differently.
If intentions aren’t your thing, ask yourself what will leave you feeling better.
Affirmations, self-nourishing care, setting boundaries for yourself, using your voice in a new way? You have options. Trust your intuition, you know what you need.
I still curse at other drivers on rare occasion. And I had to stop the urge to be annoyed at a freak snow fall the other day when spring should be here. 😩
But I don’t berate or beat myself up. I just start again.
Why? Because I feel better when I’m in my own power.
And that’s enough of a motivator for me.
It is enough for you?
